How to use Peek

Peek is an assistant that lives on your Mac. It can see your screen when you ask it something, talk you through things, point at what to click, and do tasks for you. You talk to it like a person.

The basics

Ask Peek somethingHold Control + Option, say it, let go
Dictate text into any boxTap Option + Space, talk, tap again (or hold while you talk)
Type to Peek insteadClick the Peek bar at the top of your screen (the notch) and type
Wake Peek by voiceSay “Hey Peek” (turn it on in Settings → Voice & Audio)
Stop PeekPress Esc

You can change both shortcuts in Settings → Shortcuts. While you talk, music and videos go quieter and come back when Peek finishes answering (Settings → General → Sounds → “Lower other sounds while we talk”).

What you can ask

About what's on your screen

“What does this error mean?”, “Is this a good price?”, “Which of these flights is cheapest?” Peek looks at your screen, answers out loud, and points at what it's talking about. If it isn't on the screen, Peek reads the rest of the page and the app's menus before telling you where it usually is.

How to do something here

“How do I export this as a PDF?”, “Where do I change the font?” Peek points at each button, waits for you to click it, then shows the next one. Say “write these steps down” to get them as a document.

Just the steps, explained

“Explain how to start streaming on TikTok”, “How do you make sourdough?” Peek puts a numbered list in the middle of your screen and reads it step by step. Go back, skip, pause, or click a step to hear it again.

Do it for me

“Open a new tab and go to YouTube”, “Add a meeting with Sam on Friday at 3”, “Make these photos one PDF.” Peek does it while you watch. Before sending, buying, deleting or changing a setting, it asks you first.

Reminders

“Remind me at 9 pm to call mum.” They go in your Mac's Reminders app (and on your iPhone and Watch). Peek confirms in one line; say “show me” to see it in Reminders.

Build something

“Make me a simple budget tracker”, “Build a landing page for my bakery.” Peek builds it in the background and opens it when it's ready.

Tidy up files

“Clean up my Downloads”, “Put all my invoices in one folder.” Say “undo” if you don't like the result.

Write where you're typing

With the cursor in an email or document: “Write a polite reply saying I'll be late”, “Fix the grammar in this paragraph.”

Doing things in the background

Say “in the background” (or “quietly”, “don't interrupt me”) and Peek won't bring anything to the front: reminders are added silently, builds don't pop open, links open behind what you're working on. Things that need clicking in an app can't happen invisibly; Peek will tell you, and you can say “go ahead” when you're ready.

Your recent answers

Click the Peek bar to see your latest answers. You can copy an answer, carry on a conversation, or press the copy button next to Talk and Dictate to copy what you last said.

Privacy

Peek is for work and everyday tasks. See the usage policy for what it won't do and the privacy policy for more detail.

When something goes wrong

Peek can't click or type

Peek needs Accessibility access (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility).

Peek can't see my screen

Peek needs Screen Recording access (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording).

It pointed at the wrong thing

Say what's wrong (“no, the other one”), or press Esc and ask again in different words.
